Upton: Stimulus Package Has To Wait Until After Election

Congressman Fred Upton says the opportunity to get another COVID-19 relief bill approved in Washington before the election has been lost. He was one of the federal lawmakers pushing hard to get a deal done before that cutoff point, and tells WSJM News we’ll have to wait until after next Tuesday.

“We just couldn’t get it over the finish line with the Senate, so it’s going to have to wait until after the election, but let’s hope that it will come pretty quickly in the lame duck session,” Upton said.

Will passing another stimulus bill be easier after the election?

“The answer is I don’t know. We’ll see the winners and losers. The folks that lose may not be so interested in helping put this thing back together. You still need 60 votes to get a package moving in the Senate and they’ve been short the last couple of times that they’ve tried.”

Upton says businesses need more paycheck protection support, local governments and schools need help, and people need another stimulus payment. He tells us those waiting for such help are now left in the lurch.
