Upton Reacts To Trump Stimulus Statements

Congressman Fred Upton started out Tuesday hopeful a COVID-19 stimulus package could be approved in Washington by the end of next week. Then President Trump announced he’s giving up on the stimulus negotiations until after the election. Upton told us not long after there is still a glimmer of hope.

“It’s not over until it’s over, but we were getting so close,” Upton said. “Discussions that I had this morning, discussions through the weekend, it seemed as though we were making real progress.”

Upton said with the Federal Reserve warning of another recession with no relief and the airlines about to lay off tens of thousands, the time for relief is now.

“You can’t punt this until after the election, you just can’t. That’s just too long. Too many people are hurting. You just can’t do that. So I’m trying to get Humpty Dumpty back together again. We’ll see what happens.”

Upton said the package needs to include relief for businesses, airline aid, stimulus payments, money to move forward with a vaccine, and more. He’s hoping Congress can still do its job.
