Kids Count in Michigan Early Childhood Data Analyst

The Michigan League for Public Policy is a statewide advocacy organization that works to promote economic security and well-being for all people in Michigan through the policymaking process using a race equity lens. Kids Count in Michigan, a project at the League, is part of a broad national effort to measure the well-being of children at the state and local levels, and use that information to shape efforts to improve the lives of children and their families. The League seeks to hire a Part Time Kids Count Early Childhood Data Analyst with strong commitment to improving outcomes for children and families through data-driven advocacy. This role will work alongside the Kids Count Data Analyst and report to the Kids Count Director to support state policy initiatives and data driven advocacy for children 0 – 5 years of age. 

The responsibilities of the Kids Count Early Childhood Data Analyst include data collection, processing, quality control and management with a focus on early childhood data. This person will also assist with updating and maintaining select indicators for Michigan’s data on the national KIDS COUNT Data Center and support the development and, later, maintenance of an internal database archive. 

The analyst will respond to data requests and provide technical assistance to community and organizational partners, policymakers, media and others. This includes assistance and training with finding and understanding the Kids Count data set, its primary sources, as well as delivering presentations for local communities and engaging with media on Kids Count products. 

Additionally, the analyst will lead and support the development of various data products, including fact sheets, data snapshots, issue briefs, reports, infographics and maps. This person will also monitor data and provide analyses for grant reporting as well as state and federal reporting for early childhood programs and services. 

Finally, the analyst will work with the Kids Count Director to meet project goals and identify opportunities to expand project capacity and reach, such as identifying new data sources, software and/or data tools.

Qualifications of this position include (we understand it’s unlikely that a candidate will have all of these): 

  • Strong desire to use data, policy and advocacy to ensure that all children reach their potential.
  • Relevant educational experience (bachelor’s degree preferred combined with relevant work experience).
  • High level of data experience, including conducting quantitative analysis, pulling secondary data, disaggregating data and setting-up, cleaning and configuring datasets. 
  • Advanced Excel skills with the ability to link worksheets, utilize formulas and create pivot tables. 
  • Skilled in using SAS or other statistical software programs for data analysis.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of policy issues impacting children and families in Michigan.
  • Exceptional project management skills and highly organized processes.
  • Familiarity with common data sources relating to income, population and demographics.
  • Capability to translate data into meaningful content for broad and diverse audiences.
  • Experience with data visualization tools, such as infographics and/or mapping.
  • Skilled in researching a variety of data and developing written reports, blogs, fact sheets, and other products. 
  • Experience presenting to diverse audiences.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently, but also able to collaborate and work as part of a team and with diverse partners.
  • Values and actively contributes to a culture of diversity and inclusion.
  • A passion for economic and social justice.

The position is part-time, grant-funded and based in Lansing, MI with some remote work possible. Salary range is $20 – $22 per hour. Some benefits included.
