Marion Earl Getz

Marion Earl Getz, 77, of Hartford passed away peacefully at home Sept. 20, 2020.  He was born August 16, 1943 in Cassopolis, MI to Owen and Kate (Weddell) Getz.  He graduated from Bob Jones University and attended the Grand Rapids Seminary.   He married Elaine O’Shields in 1971 in North Carolina and then moved the family to Hertford, England.  During his ten years at IBM he and his team were instrumental in creating the barcode. He went on to create a company called Data Connection, with other entrepreneurial colleagues, and later formed his own company, Arroway Data, in Hartford.

He was a member of Midway Baptist Church. One of his much-loved scriptures says of Jesus: “And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

He is survived by his children: Stephanie Getz, Trevor Getz, Keun (Monica) Getz, and David Sean (Candice) Pates; grandchildren: Emerson Marion Getz, Zaylea and Zayden Pates and their mother, Jessica Massie; his sister, Ellen Buttleman; and sister-in-law, Faye Kirsten.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers: Jesse and Arthur Getz.
Services will be held at 11:00AM, on September 26, 2020, at Midway Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wake Enterprises Inc., in honor of his nephew, Billy O’Shields, who works at the vocational rehabilitation organization for special needs adults.
