Healthy Michigan Plan Reaches Enrollee Milestone

The Healthy Michigan Plan has topped 800,000 enrollees for the first time. Michigan Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson Bob Wheaton tells WSJM News Healthy Michigan is the state’s expanded Medicaid program, made possible by the Affordable Care Act. It allows someone at 133% of the federal poverty level to qualify. The number of people covered by the program has risen quite a bit this year.

“We’ve gone up from about 682,000 in late March, right about the time the pandemic was starting,” Wheaton said. “As a result of the pandemic, one thing we’ve done is not disqualify people from the Healthy Michigan Plan if they would not continue to be eligible.”

More people have qualified for the plan due to the pandemic. Wheaton says a University of Michigan study from 2017 found Healthy Michigan had added $2.3 billion to the state’s economy by that time. Michigan has worked to streamline the application process over the past few years. You can find out about the program at Michigan.gov/HealthyMIPlan.
