Consumers Credit Union Tabbed Best to Work For in the Nation

A couple of credit unions in the region have gained national recognition as being among the best in the nation to work for, including one who checks in at the very top of the list, and another making it into the Top 10.

Consumers Credit Union was recently named the #1 Best Credit Union to Work For in the Nation for 2020. They have a branch in South Haven among other communities in West Michigan. They garnered the top spot among a group of 50 credit unions who were also recognized through a partnership between Credit Union Journal and the Best Companies Group. The survey and awards program used to determine winners were designed to identify, recognize and honor the credit unions who have excelled in creating quality workplaces for employees.

Notre Dame Federal Credit Union anchored in South Bend checks in at #9 on that list.

Aaron Passman, Editor in Chief of Credit Union Journal, says “Credit unions, deservedly, are recognized for their commitment to the communities they serve,” and adds, “Our annual ranking recognizes those that go above and beyond in terms of their employees’ job satisfaction, career development and personal growth.”

Consumers Credit Union has been fortunate over the years to win a number of employee engagement and wellness awards that reflect their commitment to creating a positive culture.

The credit union’s Chief Human Resources Officer Shawn Premer says, “We know that happy employees make for happy members,” and adds, “Consumers is an organization that empowers its employees to make a difference. And when you combine that with a benefit and wellness package that goes beyond—and a little bit of fun, too—you get an award-winning combination.”

Determining the Best Credit Unions to Work For involved a two-step process. The first consisted of evaluating each participating credit union’s workplace policies, practices and demographics. That part of the process was worth approximately 25-percent of the total evaluation. The second consisted of employee surveys aimed at assessing the experiences and attitudes of individual employees with respect to their workplace. That part of the process was worth approximately 75-percent of the total evaluation. The combined scores determined the final ranking.

To be considered for participation, credit unions had to have at least 25 employees working in the U.S. and have been in business a minimum of one year. Best Companies Group managed the registration and survey process and also analyzed the data and to determine the final ranking.
