Celebration Cinema Preparing To Reopen

Movie theaters in Michigan will be allowed to reopen this Friday, and staff at Celebration Cinema are hard at work preparing. Celebration Cinema spokesperson Emily Loeks tells WSJM News they’re almost ready.

“We will be opening six of our ten west and central Michigan theaters, the six largest ones, this Friday, and we anticipate being able to open our four smaller theaters a week or two following that,” Loeks said.

The smaller theaters include the theater in Benton Harbor. Loeks says there are some challenges that come with restarting a business that was shut down for seven months. One is having enough staff, but the bigger challenge, for Celebration Cinema, is having movies to show.

“We’ve been in an interesting chicken and the egg kind of situation where Hollywood is sort of waiting for theater openings to hit a critical mass, and theaters are sort of waiting for there to be new content available.”

Loeks says with capacity reduced to 20 people per 1,000 square feet, Celebration Cinema will likely show bigger titles like Tenet on multiple screens. They’ll enforce distancing via the reserved seating system they already have, and transactions will be all by card. Loeks tells us concessions will be available as normal, but you can also order them online and have them brought to your seat. She anticipates a slow reopening as Celebration Cinema and other chains show they can entertain again in a safe way.
